President Chavez’ Selective Remembrance: A Tribute To His Host Ahmadinejad

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned statements by Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez during his recent visit toIran.

During a joint press conference with Iranian Presidente Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Chavez defended Iran’s nuclear program andadded, “The barbarians are those who occupied and destroyed Iraq, those who assault the Palestinian people, those who went from Europe to destroy our Latin American civilization,” inreference to the Inca, Maya and Azteca peoples.

“The delibarate forgetting of the Nazi Holocaust against the Jewish people, a paradigm of genocide in the modern age,seems like a genuflection exercise from Chavez to his host, who never wastes an opportunity to deny the Holocaust,” said Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the SimonWiesenthal Center and Sergio Widder, Latin American Representative.

Chavez also commended “the deep spiritual wealth of Iranian policies,” and announced Iran’s incorporation as observer atthe Alternativa Bolivariana de las Américas (Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas), an integration project promoted by Venezuela in opposition to the Free Trade Agreement of theAmericas.

“Where does Chavez find the spiritual wealth; in the calls for the destruction of Israel, in the denial of the NaziHolocaust, in Iran’s involvement in terrorist attacks in Argentina? We condemn these statements by Chavez and call on Latin America to reject the intervention of a terrorist state such asIran in any regional integration process,” Samuels and Widder concluded.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó las declaraciones del presidente de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, formuladas durante sureciente visita a Irán.

Durante una conferencia de prensa conjunta con el presidente iraní Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Chávez defendió el programanuclear iraní y agregó que “bárbaros son los que ocuparon y destrozaron Irak, los que arremeten contra el pueblo palestino, los que fueron desde Europa a destrozar nuestra civilización enAmérica Latina”, en alusión a las civilizaciones inca, azteca y maya.

“El deliberado olvido del Holocausto perpetrado por los nazis contra el pueblo judío, que constituye el paradigma delgenocidio en la modernidad, parece un ejercicio de genuflexión del presidente Hugo Chávez ante su anfitrión, quien no desperdicia ninguna tribuna para negar el Holocausto”, señalaronShimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Simon Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina).

Chávez elogió también la “profunda riqueza espiritual en la que se fundamenta la política iraní”, y anunció laincorporación de Irán como observador en la Alternativa Bolivariana de las Américas – ALBA, un proyecto de integración promovido por Venezuela en oposición al Area de Libre Comercio delas América - ALCA.

“¿Dónde encuentra el presidente Chávez riqueza espiritual: en los llamados a favor de la destrucción de Israel, en lanegación del Holocausto, en la participación de Irán en atentados terroristas contra la Argentina? Repudiamos estas declaraciones de Chávez y hacemos un llamamiento para que AméricaLatina rechace la intervención de un estado terrorista como Irán en cualquier proceso de integración regional”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.
