Wiesenthal Center Condemns Glorification of Terrorist “Carlos, the Jackal” by Venezuela’s President – Urges OAS to Investigate That Country’s Role in Incitement for Terrorism in theAmericas

The Simon Wiesenthal Center sent a letter to Ambassador Alexandre Addor-Neto, Secretary for Multidimensional Security of the Organization of American States (OAS), urging his attention to thevindication of convicted terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, “Carlos, the Jackal”, who was labeled as “a revolutionary fighter” by the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez.

“The words by President Chavez are a new threshold in the vindication of terrorism and a glorification of violence and criminality; they are an abominable message for the youth of the Americas”,stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center. “Chavez shows contempt for the victims of terror; he would rather stand by the murderers. At this point,one may ask whether he considers them as a model for himself”, he added.

“We have repeatedly denounced Chavez’ inflammatory rhetoric. The glorification of a terrorist such as ‘Carlos’ demands a hemispheric effort to investigate Venezuela’s role in the promotion ofterrorism in the Americas”, said Sergio Widder, the Center’s Director for Latin America. “These statements should be added to the praising of tyrants like Idi Amin and Robert Mugabe. We, LatinAmericans, do not want a demagogue to take us backwards to dark ages”.

“We urge the OAS to promote an investigation of the Venezuelan government ties with international terrorist organizations. The tragedies of the attacks suffered in Argentina against the IsraeliEmbassy and the AMIA Jewish Center (1192and 1994, respectively), as well as the accusation against Hizbollah by the Argentine justice strengthen our request”, Samuels and Widder concluded.

The Center has already expressed its solidarity with France at this unconscionable intervention into the independence of the French judiciary and the impugning of its credibility.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal dirigió una carta al Embajador Alexandre Addor-Neto, Secretario de Seguridad Multidimensional de la Organización de los Estados Americanos, reclamando su atención antela reivindicación por parte del presidente de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, del terrorista Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, conocido como “Carlos, el Chacal” (actualmente cumpliendouna condena a cadena perpetua en Francia), a quien calificó como “un luchador revolucionario”.

“Las palabras del presidente Chávez representan un nuevo umbral en la reivindicación del terrorismo; constituyen una apología de la violencia, y un mensaje abominable para las juventudes de lasAméricas”, señaló Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal. “Chávez desprecia a las víctimas del terror; prefiere ponerse del lado de los asesinos. A estaaltura de las circunstancias resulta inevitable preguntarse si no los considera un modelo para sí mismo”, agregó.

“Hemos denunciado reiteradamente ante la OEA la retórica intolerante del gobierno del presidente Chávez. La glorificación de un terrorista como “Carlos” demandan un esfuerzo hemisférico parainvestigar qué rol cumple hoy Venezuela en la promoción del terrorismo en las Américas”, manifestó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro. “Estos dichos de Chávez se suman a susrecientes elogios a tiranos como Idi Amin y el dictador de Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe. Los latinoamericanos no queremos que un demagogo nos haga retroceder a épocas superadas”.

“Urgimos a que la OEA promueva una investigación de los nexos entre el gobierno venezolano y organizaciones terroristas internacionales. La experiencia de los ataques terroristas en la RepúblicaArgentina, contra la Embajada de Israel y la sede de la AMIA (Buenos Aires, 1992 y 1994 respectivamente), y las acusaciones formuladas por la justicia argentina contra la agrupación terroristaHezbollah por su involucramiento en el atentado contra la AMIA fortalecen nuestro requerimiento”, concluyeron Samuels y Widder.

El Centro ya expresó también su solidaridad con Francia ante esta inconcebible intromisión en la independencia de su justicia y la impugnación de su credibilidad.
