SWC Alerts Brazilian Government: “Detain for Extradition any INTERPOL Sought Iranians Implicated in the AMIA Jewish Center Bombing Likely to Join Ahmadinejad Delegation at Rio+20 Summit

In letter to Brazilian Justice Minister, José Eduardo Cardozo (pictured), Simon Wiesenthal Center officials, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations)and Sergio Widder (Director for Latin America and Delegate to Rio+20) stressed that “Tehran is held responsible by Argentina forthe terrorist attack against the AMIA Jewish Center in Buenos Aires (1994), which killed 85 and injured hundreds. Subsequent, INTERPOL arrest warrants were issued for five Iranianofficials. Three other suspects were included in the Argentine investigation; all eight remain fugitive. President Ahmadinejad has protected these suspects and rejected allArgentine extradition requests”.

“These are Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (former President of Iran), Ali Fallahijan (former Minister of Intelligence), Ali Akbar Velayati (Former Foreign Minister), Mohsen Rezai(former Chief of the Revolutionary Forces Pasdaran), Ahmad Vahidi (current Minister of Defence), Mohsen Rabbani (former Cultural Attaché in Argentina), Ahmad Reza Asghari (formerThird Secretary of Iran in Argentina), Hadi Soleimanpour (former Ambassador to Argentina),” added the Center.

“In the past, we have exposed similar such visits to Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and, most recently, Defence Minister Vahidi’s trip to Bolivia, in May 2011. Each of thesecountries have betrayed their obligations as States-Parties of INTERPOL and, thereby, offend the memory of the victims while encouraging further terrorism in the Americas,”suggested Samuels.

“The Brazilian authorities have been alerted. We call on them to detain the suspects and hand them over to the Argentine authorities if any are identified among the officialIranian delegation to Rio+20. Brazil has a particular duty to its Argentine neighbor,” said Widder.

Centro Wiesenthal alerta al gobierno de Brasil: “arresten y extraditen a cualquiera de los iraníes buscados por INTERPOL en relación con el atentado contra la AMIA en caso queintegren la delegación de Ahmadinejad a Rio+20”

En una carta al ministro de Justicia de Brasil, José Eduardo Cardozo, directivos del Centro Simon Wiesenthal, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales) ySergio Widder (Director paraAmérica Latina y delegado para Rio+20), puntualizaron que “el régimen de Teherán ha sido señalado por la justicia argentina como responsable de haber planificado y ordenado elataque terrorista contra la sede de la AMIA en Buenos Aires, en 1994, que provocó 85 muertos y centenares de heridos. En consecuencia, INTERPOL refrendó órdenes de captura paracinco funcionarios iraníes. La investigación involucra también a otros tres sospechosos. Los ocho continúan prófugos. El presidente Ahmadinejad ha protegido a estos individuos yrechazado los pedidos de extradición argentinos”.

“Ellos son Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (expresidente de Irán), Ali Fallahijan (exministro de Inteligencia), Ali Akbar Velayati (excanciller), Mohsen Rezai (exjefe de la GuardiaRevolucionaria Pasdaran), Ahmad Vahidi (actual ministro de Defensa), Mohsen Rabbani (exconsejero cultural de la embajada de Irán en Argentina), Ahmad Reza Asghari (extercersecretario de la embajada de Irán en Argentina), Hadi Soleimanpour (exembajador de Irán en Argentina)”, agregó el Centro.

“En el pasado, hemos expuesto visitas similares que algunos de los sospechosos han realizado a Arabia Saudita, Sudáfrica y, más recientemente, el viaje a Bolivia del ministro deDefensa Vahidi, en mayo de 2011. Cada uno de estos países ha traicionado sus obligaciones como miembro de INTERPOL, y así se ha ofendido la memoria de las víctimas a la vez quealentado la continuidad del terror en las Américas”, señaló Samuels.

“Las autoridades brasileras han sido alertadas. Hacemos un llamamiento para que detengan a los sospechosos y los entreguen a las autoridades argentinas en caso que alguno de ellosfuera identificado como integrante de la delegación oficial de Irán para Rio+20”, manifestó Widder.
