The Simon Wiesenthal Center expressed outrage comments made by Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa, on the AMIA – Jewish Centerbombing, during his visit to Argentina.

In an interview withC5N’s network host Debora Plager, Correa defended his country’s close relations with Tehran saying, “I do not consider Iran a threat… it is a democratic country, at leastformally, while the U.S. has, among its allies, monarchies with no elections, countries where women cannot drive that have a religious police… There I see a double standard. Weshould not be manipulated by certain hegemonic countries.” When Plager replied that “for Argentina this is very sensitive, since Iranian officials are accused of havingparticipated in the AMIA – Jewish Center attack,” Correa responded, “I know that this is a very painful case for Argentina, but how many people died in NATO’s bombing of Libya?Let’s compare to see where the real danger lies.”

“Correa’s contempt for the victims of Iranian-sponsored terrorism speaks for itself. In adopting an anti-imperialistdemagoguery, he has justified the Buenos Aires massacre. His comparison of Iran with ‘monarchies of the region’ endorses apparently such ‘good tyrants’ as the late Gadaffi andSyrian dictator Bashar Al Assad. Where are the expressions of Argentine indignation?” asked Dr. Shimon Samuels, SWC Director for International Relations.

“The Argentine government should demand a prompt and public apology from Correa for his offensive statements. If he is a truefriend of Argentina, he should employ his intimacy with Tehran to demand that the Iranian suspects be brought to justice with no further delay, instead of justifying terror,”added Sergio Widder, SWC Director for Latin America.

“Snubbing his Argentine host, Correa took the line of the Venezuelan-led ALBA bloc. Hugo Chavez interfered on Iran’s behalfagainst the indictment Iranian accomplices; Bolivian Evo Morales welcomed the suspect, current Iranian Defense Minister, Ahmad Vahidi, and now Ecuador’s Correa banalizes theatrocity in the city where it occurred,” concluded the Center’s officials.

Centro Wiesenthal: “El desprecio del presidente ecuatoriano Rafael Correa en sus comentarios acerca del atentadocontra la AMIA y su encubrimiento de Irán son un insulto a los familiares de las víctimas y a todos los argentinos”

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal manifestó su indignación debido a los comentarios acerca del ataque terrorista contra la AMIAefectuados por el presidente de Ecuador, Rafael Correa, durante su visita a Argentina en el día de la fecha.

En el marco de una entrevista con Débora Plager (C5N), Correa defendió la relación de su país con Teherán, señalando que “noconsidero que Irán sea una amenaza… Es un país democrático, al menos formalmente, mientras que se puede ver que Estados Unidos tiene entre sus aliados a monarquías sin elecciones,países en los que las mujeres no pueden conducir vehículos, que tienen policía religiosa… Yo veo ahí una doble moral. No debemos dejarnos manipular por ciertos paíseshegemónicos”. Cuando Plager dijo que “para Argentina este tema es sensible porque hay funcionarios iraníes acusados de haber participado en el ataque contra la AMIA”, Correarespondió: “yo se que se trata de un caso muy doloroso para Argentina, pero ¿cuánta gente murió en los bombardeos de la OTAN a Libia? Comparemos y veamos dónde está elverdaderopeligro”.

“El desprecio de Correa hacia las víctimas del terrorismo patrocinado por Irán habla por sí solo. Al adoptar un discursoanti-imperialista demagógico, ha justificado una masacre ocurrida en Buenos Aires. Su comparación de Irán con ‘monarquías de la región’ indica un aparente apoyo a ‘tiranosbuenos’, tales como el difunto Khadaffi y el dictador sirio Bashar Al Assad. ¿Dónde están las expresiones de indignación de Argentina?”, manifestó el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Directorde Relaciones Internacionales del Centro).

“El gobierno argentino debe reclamar una inmediata disculpa pública de Correa, debido a sus comentarios ofensivos. Si es unverdadero amigo de Argentina, debería utilizar su intimidad con Teherán para reclamar que los sospechosos comparezcan ante la justicia sin más dilaciones, en vez de justificar elterror”, agregó Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina).
“En un desaire a su anfitrión, Correa se posicionó junto a sus compañeros del bloque ALBA. En vez de apoyar a Argentina, elpresidente venezolano Hugo Chávez interfirió a favor de los iraníes acusados; el presidente boliviano Evo Morales dio la bienvenida a uno de los sospechosos, el actual ministro deDefensa iraní Ahmad Vahidi; y ahora, el presidente ecuatoriano Rafael Correa banaliza el ataque en la misma ciudad donde se cometió”, concluyeron los directivos delCentro.
