Wiesenthal Centre to Belgian Internal Affairs Minister: "Investigate Flemish Interest Party Skinhead Links to RacistMurders in Antwerp"

In a letter to Belgian Internal Affairs Vice Premier Minister, Patrick De Wael, the Wiesenthal Centre's Director forInternational Relations, Dr. Shimon Samuels, expressed "shock and disgust" at the racist murders yesterday of a female African babysitter and the white child in her care. The shooting tookplace at a park in Antwerp. The assailant went on to seriously wound a Turkish woman, and was only stopped when he was shot and wounded by a policeman. Samuels noted, "Despite thecondemnation of these killings by the extreme right Flemish Interest Party (formerly Vlams Blok), it is clear that the impunity granted to their Skinhead retinue and the tenor of their websitelinks have encouraged a rising wave of racist violence in Belgium."

The Centre urged the Belgian authorities "to apply the full measure of the law in punishing the perpetrators and exposing theirnetworks. A complete investigation must be launched into the activities of the Flemish Interest and its associates."

Samuels transmitted the sympathies of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre's membership to the families of the victims, "Whether white,black, Turkish or Jewish - all hate is indivisible."

Le Centre Simon Wiesenthal au ministre belge de l'Intérieur : "Enquêtez sur les liens des skinheads du parti Intérêtflamand avec les meurtres racistes à Anvers."

Dans une lettre au Vice-premier ministre, ministre de l'Intérieur belge M. Patrick Dewael, le directeur pour les relationsinternationales du Centre Wiesenthal, M. Shimon Samuels, a fait part de " son horreur et de son dégoût devant les meurtres commis hier à Anvers." Il a poursuivi : "Malgré la condamnation deces assassinats par le parti d'extrême droite Intérêt Flamand (ex. Vlams Blok), il est clair que l'impunité accordée à leurs cohortes de skinheads et au ténor de leurs sites Internet a encouragé la montée de la vague de violence raciste en Belgique."

Le Centre Wiesenthal a pressé les autorités belges " d'appliquer tous les moyens légaux pour punir les auteurs de cescrimes et dévoiler leurs réseaux Internet. Une enquête de grande envergure doit être lancée sur les activités d'Intérêt flamand et leurs alliés."

M. Samuels a fait part de la sympathie des membres du Centre Simon Wiesenthal aux familles des victimes "qu'elles soientblanches, noires, turques ou juives… - toute haine est indivisible."
