SWC Urges Chilean Congressional Leadership to Condemn Politicians' Anti-Semitic Diatribes Following Massive Forest Fires

“Condemn Members’ Diatribes as Violation of Latin American Parliament Directive against Antisemitism”

Buenos Aires, January 4, 2012

In a letter to Senator Guido Girardi Lavin and Congressman Patricio Melero Abaroa, Presidents of the respective Chambers of the Chilean Congress, the Simon Wiesenthal Center protested incitement to anti-Semitism bytwo of its members following the arrest of Israeli tourist, Rotem Singer, who stands accused of starting a wildfire in the southern Patagonian forest region of Torres del Paine.

Congressman Fuad Chahin announced via Twitter: “I bet that the Israeli ‘tourist’ who caused the blaze is one of those sent by his government after killing Palestinianchildren”. Senator Eugenio Tuma added that “it is not normal that the Israeli government send a military team to tour Patagonia. The free transit of tourists is completely differentfrom having a State financing and organizing its former soldiers”.

“These unfounded charges are patently aimed at Jews in general and are redolent of 'The Andean Plan’ – the Latin version of the notorious ‘Protocols of the Elders of Zion’ conspiracyforgery. The antisemitic rhetoric of Chahin and Tuma abuses an ecological catastrophe as a vector for hate. They violate a Directive against Antisemitism submitted by the WiesenthalCenter and adopted on 2 December 2011 by the PARLATINO (Latin American Parliament) as model legislation for the continent,” stated Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director for International Relationsof the Wiesenthal Center.

“In September 2011, Chile hosted the Americas’ Prepcom for the Rio+20 environmental summit. Our Center successfully worked to keep the agenda on focus. We regret that it has now beenpolluted with racist statements. We offer our Center’s expertise for the promotion of anti-discrimination legislation in Chile,” added Sergio Widder, Director for Latin America.

Samuels and Widder urged the Congress Presidents “to publicly condemn the defamatory remarks by their Members and adopt the PARLATINO Declaration against Antisemitism at the nationallevel.”

En una carta al Senador Guido Girardi Lavin y al Diputado Patricio Melero Abaroa, Presidentes de las respectivas Cámaras del Congreso de Chile, el Centro Simon Wiesenthal condenó losagravios antijudíos por parte de dos de sus miembros, luego delarresto del turista israelí Rotem Singer, quien ha sido acusado de iniciar el incendio forestal en Torres del Paine.

El diputado Fuad Chahin manifestó a través de su cuenta en Twitter: “apostaría que el ‘turista’ israelí que causó incendio en Torres del Paine es d (sic) aquellos enviados por su Estadoluego de matar niños palestinos”. Por otra parte, el senador Eugenio Tuma dijo que “no es normal que el gobierno israelí envíe un contingente militar para hacer turismo en la Patagonia.Una cosa es el libre tránsito de los turistas, pero otra es que el Estado financie yorganice a sus ex reclutas”.

“Estos cargos infundados están claramente dirigidos contra los judíos en general y remiten al ‘Plan Andinia’ – la versión latinoamericana de una conocida fabricación conspirativa, los‘Protocolos de los Sabios de Sion’. La retórica antisemita de Chahin y Tuma se abusa de una catástrofe ecológica y la transforma en un vector para el odio. Sus palabras violan laDeclaración contra el Antisemitismo propuesta por el Centro Wiesenthal y adoptada por el Parlamento Latinoamericano (PARLATINO) el 2 dediciembre de 2011, como un modelo legislativo parael continente”, señaló el Dr. Shimon Samuels, Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro SimonWiesenthal.
“En septiembre de 2011 Chile fue anfitrión de la reunión preparatoria de las Américas para la cumbre ambiental Rio +20. En esa oportunidad, nuestro Centro contribuyó de manera exitosapara que la agenda ambiental se mantuviera en foco. Lamentamos que ahora se la distorsione con expresiones racistas. Ofrecemos la experiencia de nuestro Centro para la promoción delegislación antidiscriminatoria en Chile”, agregó Sergio Widder, Director para América Latina del Centro.

Samuels y Widder urgieron a los Presidentes de las Cámaras de Senadores y Diputados a que “condenen públicamente los comentarios difamatorios de algunos de sus miembros y a que adopten laDeclaración contra el Antisemitismo del PARLATINO al nivel nacional”.
