The Wiesenthal Center is deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic death of Argentine Special Prosecutor Alberto Nisman, who wasfound
dead in his apartment this morning, with a gunshot wound to his head.
Prosecutor Nisman, who was in charge of the investigation of the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish Center, was scheduled to testifyin Congress today, in order to offer details about the accusations he made last week against Argentine President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Foreign Minister Héctor Timerman, members of theCongress and radical activists who are close to the government of having organized a cover-up operation that would disengage the Iranian suspects from the AMIA terror attack.
Nisman’s tragic death put us further away than ever before from truth and justice, both in the AMIA attack itself as well as in his lastdenunciation.
Today’s deadly outcome must not hide a core question: his denunciation regarding an alleged cover up by the Argentine government must beinvestigated till the end.
There is a new course of investigation: beyond the AMIA bombing and the accusations of covering up, we demand an independent investigationabout the circumstances around Prosecutor Nisman’s death.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center urges the Argentine authorities to preserve all the material gathered by Prosecutor Nisman and to guarantee thesecurity of all the members of Nisman’s staff.
We express our condolences to the family of Prosecutor Alberto Nisman.
We reaffirm our solidarity with the families of the 85 victims of the AMIA bombing.
Since 1994, and throughout all of its administrations, Argentina holds a debt with the democratic world which is under terrorist fire, withthe victims of terror all over the world, with the Argentine society and, particularly, with the families of the 85 victims of the AMIA massacre: 20 years after the bombing no person is inprison.
Our mentor, the late Simon Wiesenthal, said: “Freedom is not a gift from heaven; one must fight for it every day”.
We must also fight for truth and justice. And we will.

Declaración del Centro Simon Wiesenthal acerca de la muerte del fiscal Alberto Nisman

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal recibió con tristeza y conmoción la noticia acerca de la muerte del fiscal a cargo de la Unidad de InvestigaciónAMIA, Alberto Nisman.
El fiscal Nisman iba a prestar testimonio en el día de hoy ante el Congreso de la Nación para brindar detalles acerca de su denuncia dela semana pasada contra la Presidenta de la Nación, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, el Ministro de RelacionesExteriores, Héctor Timerman, miembros del Congreso y activistas simpatizantes del gobierno, a quienes acusó de haber montado una operación de encubrimiento de los sospechosos iraníes en el casodel ataque terrorista contra la AMIA a cambio de favorecer los vínculos comerciales entre Argentina e Irán.
Su trágica muerte, en circunstancias misteriosas, nos aleja más de la verdad y la justicia.
Desde 1994, el Estado argentino, a través de todas y cada una de sus administraciones, mantiene una deuda con un mundo que se encuentra bajola agresión terrorista.
La sociedad argentina y, en particular, las familias de las víctimas del ataque a la AMIA están aún esperando que la justicia les permitacerrar esta etapa; pero a más de 20 años no hay una sola persona condenada.
El fatal desenlace conocido hoy no debe ocultar una cuestión medular de los últimos días: las denuncias en relación a un supuestoencubrimiento por parte del gobierno argentino deben investigarse plenamente.
Hoy se suma una nueva causa que debe ser investigada: además del atentado a la AMIA y de las acusaciones de encubrimiento exigimos que seinvestiguen de manera independiente las circunstancias que rodean la muerte del fiscal Nisman.
El Centro Wiesenthal reclama que el gobierno argentino garantice la preservación de todo el material recopilado por el fiscal Nisman y laseguridad de todos los integrantes de su equipo de colaboradores.
Manifestamos nuestras condolencias a la familia del fiscal Alberto Nisman.
Reafirmamos nuestra solidaridad con las familias de las 85 víctimas de la masacre de la AMIA.
Nuestro mentor, Simon Wiesenthal, solía decir: “La libertad no es un regalo del cielo; debemos luchar por ella cada día”.
