In its May 15, 2008 edition, Moscow News published an interview in which Ambassador Navarro Rojas said that among those involved in a failed coup d’etat of April 11, 2002, aimed atoverthrowing Hugo Chávez, there were "many Mossad snipers, who were Venezuelan citizens but Jews."

In a letter to the minister, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International Relations of the Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American Representative) called NavarroRojas’ statements outrageous. "It seems that, for the ambassador, Venezuelan Jews belong to a different category of citizens, which should be particularly singled out."

"This is not the first time that high officials of the government of Venezuela make anti-Jewish comments. The words of Ambassador Navarro Rojas are racist, and incite to violenceagainst Jews, not only in Venezuela, but throughout the region. His words are inspired by such conspiracy theories as the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion", the libel that was firstpublished in 1905, in czarist Russia, and is the Bible for contemporary antisemites. The ambassador of a country that proclaims itself the architect of a 21st century Socialismspouts the same fascist sources that were responsible for millions of Russian deaths in the 20th century,” the added.

"Mr. Minister, at this week’s OAS General Assembly in Medellin, you defended Venezuela’s democratic standards. We thus expect Ambassador Navarro Rojas be immediately recalled forhis undiplomatic, offensive and racist assault on your country’s reputation,” concluded Samuels and Widder.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal se dirigió al ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, para reclamar la remoción de Alexis Rafael Navarro Rojas, embajador deVenezuela ante Rusia, quien formuló declaraciones antisemitas a un semanario de Moscú.

En su edición del 15 de mayo último, el periódico Moscow News publicó un reportaje en el cual el embajador Navarro Rojas dijo que en el fallido golpe de estado del 11 de abril de2002, que pretendió derrocar al presidente Hugo Chávez, participaron “numerosos francotiradores del Mossad, que eran ciudadanos venezolanos pero judíos”.

En una carta al ministro, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales del Centro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Representante para América Latina) calificaron losdichos de Navarro Rojas como escandalosos. “Pareciera que, para el embajador, los judíos venezolanos pertenecen a una categoría diferente de ciudadanos, que debe ser señaladaparticularmente”.

“No es la primera vez que desde altas esferas del gobierno de Venezuela se emite un comentario antijudío. Las palabras del embajador Navarro Rojas destilan racismo e incitan a laviolencia contra los judíos, no sólo en Venezuela sino en toda la región. Tales expresiones remiten a un pensamiento conspirativo inspirado en los Protocolos de los Sabios deSion, el libro de cabecera de los antisemitas contemporáneos que se publicó por primera vez, precisamente, en la Rusia zarista de 1905. El embajador de un país que se proclamacomo el arquitecto del socialismo del siglo XXI, se nutre de las mismas fuentes fascistas que fueron responsables por la muerte de millones de rusos durante el siglo XX”,agregaron.

“Sr. Ministro, esta misma semana, durante la Asamblea General de la OEA que tuvo lugar en Medellín, Ud. defendió los estándares democráticos de Venezuela. En ese mismo espíritu,esperamos que remueva y reemplace inmediatamente al embajador Navarro Rojas en virtud de su ataque antidiplomático, racista y ofensivo hacia la reputación de su país”, concluyeronSamuels y Widder.
