Wiesenthal Center Urges Colombian Authorities to intervene to Prevent Neo-Nazi Festival Honoring Rudolf Hess
The Simon Wiesenthal Center urged Colombian Minister of Interior and Justice, Fabio Valencia Cossio, to ban a festival in honor of Rudolf Hess, a close associate of Adolf Hitler, sentenced inNuremberg in October, 1946.
In a letter to minister Valencia Cossio, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International
Relations of theWiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (the Center’s Director for Latin America) denounced the festival as “organized by a group named Tercera Fuerza – Third Force, which is scheduled for August 15at Bunker 88; in the neo-Nazi lexicon, 88 represents H.H. – Heil Hitler.”
“Rudolf Hess is a metaphor for extremist and radical forces. To glorify him is an attack on Colombian democracy, the same democracy which is being challenged by today’s radical terror groups. Weurge you to take measures against this abuse of freedom by those who glorify a genocidal regime,” stated Samuels and Widder.
The Center noted that President Alvaro Uribe Vélez has written an article regarding the dangers of totalitarianism, included in the book Antisemitism: The Generic Hatred – Essays in Memory ofSimon Wiesenthal.
The Wiesenthal Center learned about this festival through its systematic monitoring of extremist groups’ activities on the Internet.

El Centro Simon Wiesenthal solicitó la intervención del Ministro del Interior y Justicia de Colombia, Fabio Valencia Cossio, para prevenir la realización en Bogotá de un festival en homenaje aRudolf Hess, uno de los líderes nazis más cercanos a Adolf Hitler, condenado por los tribunales de Nüremberg en octubre de 1946.
En una carta al ministro Valencia Cossio, el Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director de Relaciones Internacionales delCentro Wiesenthal) y Sergio Widder (Director para América Latina) denunciaron que “la convocatoria fue realizada por un grupo denominado Tercera Fuerza, y se ha fijado para el sábado 15 de agostoen Bunker 88; en la jerga neonazi, el número 88 significa H.H. – Heil Hitler.”
“Rudolf Hess es una metáfora para las fuerzas extremistas y radicalizadas. Convocar a un encuentro para homenajearlo es un ataque contra la democracia colombiana, esa misma democracia que hoytambién es desafiada por otros grupos extremistas que practican el terror. Urgimos a Ud. a tomar las medidas que correspondan para evitar el abuso de las libertades democráticas por parte dequienes reivindican un sistema genocida”, señalaron Samuels y Widder.
